Influenza A viruses are
easily caught by inhaling coughed or sneezed or exhaled particles from
an infected person.
They can also be spread by faeces and other
body fluids. Influenza viruses can live on non porous surfaces for up
to 2 days. A person can spread the virus 1 – 3 days before symptoms
show. You can have the virus and yet not have any symptoms (asymptomatic).
You may still be contagious for up to a week after you stop feeling symptoms.
Children can be contagious for up to 21 days after symptoms stop.
To avoid influenza
- Keep your distance
At least 1m from people and avoid those who may
be coughing or sneezing.
- Physical contact
Avoid physical contact with people, handshaking,
kissing, hugging.
- Avoid crowded places and public
transport
If close contact with others is unavoidable, as
in jobs with face-to-face contact with the public; retail, public transport,
cafes etc., or if you are caring for someone who is ill with influenza,
wear a suitable mask.
- Anything may be contaminated
Develop an awareness that everything you touch
in public may be contaminated: doorknobs, handrails, ATM machines, taps,
lift buttons, keyboards, money, eftpos cards, counter tops, food etc.
- Avoid touching your face
Unless you have just washed your hands avoid touching
your eyes, nose and mouth. Always consider your hands to be contaminated.
- Hand washing
To clean your hands, wash thoroughly with soap
and running water, scrubbing vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Dry
completely preferably with a disposable paper towel.
- Disposal
